NCS Kogi State Chapter Holds 2026 Techies Day, Advocates Stronger Cybersecurity and Data Protection
The Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), Kogi State Chapter, successfully hosted its 2026 Techies Day on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at the 200-Seater Twin Lecture Theatre, Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, bringing together key stakeholders from academia, government, industry, and the broader ICT ecosystem to discuss pressing issues surrounding cybersecurity and data protection in Nigeria.
The event, themed “From Threat to Trust: Enhancing Cybersecurity and Ensuring Data Protection,” was organized to raise awareness about emerging cyber threats, digital privacy, data protection, and cybercrime, while contributing meaningfully to ongoing national conversations aimed at building a more secure and trusted digital environment.
In his welcome address, the Chairman of NCS Kogi State Chapter, C.itp Godwin Sani, welcomed participants and emphasized the importance of cybersecurity awareness and responsible data management in today’s increasingly interconnected digital landscape. He noted that the rapid adoption of emerging technologies presents both opportunities and challenges, making cybersecurity and data protection critical priorities for governments, institutions, businesses, and individuals.
According to him, the Techies Day initiative was designed not only to educate and sensitize participants on contemporary digital threats but also to provide a platform for collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing among ICT professionals and stakeholders.
The event attracted a diverse audience comprising ICT professionals, academics, industry experts, policymakers, government officials, students, innovators, and technology enthusiasts from across the state and beyond.
Delivering the keynote address, Prof. Afolayan A. Obiniyi, Dean, Faculty of Computing and Head of the Department of Computer Science, Federal University Lokoja, highlighted the growing sophistication of cyber threats and the urgent need for organizations and individuals to adopt proactive cybersecurity measures.
He stressed that trust remains the foundation of digital transformation and sustainable technological advancement, emphasizing that effective cybersecurity frameworks and robust data protection policies are indispensable for building confidence in digital systems and services.
In his goodwill message that was read earlier by the Publicity Secretary, Mr. Chris Yahaya, the Zonal Coordinator, NCS North Central Zone, Dr. Oyeyinka Dantala Oyerinde, conveyed warm felicitations from the National Executive Council under the leadership of the National President of NCS, Prof. Sirajo Aliyu, FNCS. He assured the commitment of the North Central Zone to supporting chapters like Kogi to grow its membership, run ethical programmes, and position NCS as the voice of IT in various states in Nigeria.
The event was graced by distinguished guests and dignitaries who contributed significantly to the discussions. Among them were Dr. Helen Adeniyi Aderibigbe, Honourable Commissioner, Kogi State Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology; Mr. Abdulrahaman Muhammed Al-Basheer, Director of Tertiary and Continuing Education, who represented the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Kogi State; Mrs. Comfort Adive, Desk Officer, Ministry of Education, Department of Science and Technology Education; Mr. Olumobi John Adewale, Technical Assistant, Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology; and Prof. Bamidele Oluwade, FNCS, a distinguished Fellow of the Nigeria Computer Society.
One of the major highlights of the event was the Information Technology Roundtable Discussion themed “Emerging Cyber Threats and Data Protection in the Digital Age.” The session was expertly moderated by Dr. Ayodele Oluwakemi, FNCS, National President of the Nigeria Women in Information Technology (NIWIIT) and Immediate Past Chairman of NCS Kogi State Chapter.
The panel discussion featured respected ICT leaders and policymakers, including Dr. Bashir S. Tenuche, Director-General of the Kogi State ICT Development Agency; Mr. Ibrahim Danasebe Muhammed, representing the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Education; Comr. Saidat Oziohu Jimoh, State Focal Person, Campus Security Initiative; and Folusho Owoeye.
Panelists examined emerging cyber threats, digital vulnerabilities, online safety concerns, and the increasing importance of data protection in both public and private sectors. They also discussed practical strategies for strengthening cybersecurity resilience, promoting digital literacy, improving policy implementation, and encouraging responsible technology adoption across society.
Participants actively engaged in the discussions, sharing perspectives on cybercrime prevention, online identity protection, digital governance, and the role of education in fostering a cybersecurity-conscious culture.
Another exciting component of the programme was the Secondary Schools ICT Quiz Competition, which tested participants’ knowledge in various ICT-related subjects, including Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Database Management Systems (DBMS), Computer Hardware and Software, Operating Systems, and General Computer Knowledge.
The automated quiz session was coordinated by Mr. Adebayo Olaoluwa, Treasurer of NCS Kogi State Chapter, alongside Mr. Richard, ensuring transparency, fairness, and efficiency throughout the competition.
Four secondary schools participated in the highly competitive contest: Crowther Memorial College, Lokoja – 1st Position, Bishop Delis Secondary School, Lokoja – 2nd Position, GYB Model Secondary School, Adankolo – 3rd Position, and Government Girls Secondary School – 4th Position.
At the conclusion of the competition, winners and participants received prizes, including certificates of participation, customized notebooks, and cash rewards in recognition of their outstanding performance and enthusiasm for ICT education.
The programme also featured an Innovation and Technology Exhibition coordinated by Mr. Famous Emeka Onyema, Chairman, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Committee of NCS Kogi State Chapter.
During the exhibition, Mr. Jonathan Odoh showcased an innovative Property Management and Verification System designed to enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency in property administration and verification processes.
The innovation attracted considerable interest from participants, industry professionals, and dignitaries, earning widespread commendation for its practical application and potential societal impact. Stakeholders expressed optimism about the solution’s future prospects and indicated their willingness to support efforts aimed at promoting and publicizing the innovation within the state’s growing technology ecosystem.
In his vote of thanks, the Vice Chairman NCS Kogi State Chapter, Mr. Abdulkarim Musa, appreciated the planning committee, chaired by the Chairman of Education and Manpower Development Committee, Dr. Victoria I. Yemi-Peters, an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science, Federal University Lokoja, for their commitment to the successful execution of the programme.
Speaking at the conclusion of the event, participants commended the Nigeria Computer Society, Kogi State Chapter, for sustaining initiatives that foster professional development, innovation, digital awareness, and stakeholder engagement.
Many attendees described the programme as timely, insightful, and impactful, particularly in view of the increasing cybersecurity challenges confronting organizations and individuals globally.
The successful hosting of the 2026 Techies Day further reinforces the commitment of the Nigeria Computer Society, Kogi State Chapter, to advancing Information Technology education, promoting innovation, strengthening cybersecurity awareness, and contributing to the socio-economic development of Kogi State and Nigeria at large.
